A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have since been recovered

Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
