Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
